Funding

Conducting research and applying for funding is a key element to being a researcher.

Securing research funding from prestigious sources, is in itself deemed a measure of esteem and strengthens research assessment performance. Research income is also used to benchmark the performance of the university, departments and indeed individual academics.

USW has a strong track record in attracting external funding from competitive sources such as the European Framework Programmes, European Structural Funds, Research Councils and Innovate UK. See our Impact Case Studies for more information on current research projects. (LINK)

The Research and Innovation Service (RISe) has a dedicated funding team to provide professional advice and guidance when applying for external research funding. The team can work with you at all stages of your application, right through from helping to form a project idea and finding the most suitable funding source, to negotiating with the funder and signing contracts.

If you are interested in applying for external funding please contact the Funding Support team.

There is a huge range of funding sources available to academics to access for support with research and innovation activity.

The RISe Funding Development team have significant knowledge and experience of different funding streams and are able to provide guidance and advice on the most suitable source for the activity you are planning, any eligibility and compliance issues and how to compose a bid in order to meet the individual funder criteria.

Funding sources range from small local trusts and foundations, to global research programmes. Some common sources of funding are covered in the links below, but we can also work to find an appropriate stream for more niche activity if required.
