USW Criminologist addresses World Justice Forum

Dr Ali Wardak, Reader in Criminology, spoke at the World Justice Forum V, held at the Hague last month. 

The focus of the Forum was to share insights, explore strategies and develop collaborative solutions for promoting and institutionalising rule of law around the world.

Dr Wardak was part of the plenary session, which focused on ‘Harmonizing Formal, Informal, and Customary Justice’. His presentation looked at ‘Strengthening rule of law through engagement with non-state justice providers’.

This session was also addressed by Hon Hassan Jallow, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of The Gambia; Hon Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé, Ambassador of Bolivia to The Netherlands, and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bolivia, Hilary Tompkins, Partner, Hogan Lovells, and former Solicitor for the US Department of the Interior (DOI).

Tim Hanstad, Co-Founder and Senior Advisor, Landesa (USA) moderated the session. 

Dr Wardak, said: "The discussions raised important questions and called for close international collaboration on promoting rule of law through engagement with non-state justice providers around the world.

"The Forum was attended by legal scholars, politicians, high-ranking judicial officials, diplomats, representatives of  civil society, academia and the media."
